I took a step sideways, tugging Cocoa with me. But as soon as I started to move, I heard another piglet.

“Oh, no,” I whimpered. I’d been so busy watching the first two pigs that I’d stepped right toward another one.

The mama hog’s tail went up.

I started to scramble up the closest tree. Then I remembered Cocoa couldn’t climb. I couldn’t leave her.

I had my shotgun still slung across my back.

Should I shoot the hog? I wondered.

But she had baby piglets. And my shotgun was only meant for hunting birds. If I didn’t make a perfect shot, I would probably just make the hog madder.

Slowly, I dropped back to the ground.

The hog shook her head and growled. I couldn’t look away from her sharp tusks.

My hands shook as I grabbed a thick branch off the ground. I was going to have to defend myself and Cocoa.

I raised the branch, shaking so hard the leaves on it rustled. Cocoa’s whines turned into growls.

The hog started to charge. Then … boom!
